DIY Potting Mix for Thriving Indoor Plants

Whether you’re a gardening enthusiast or just embarking on your green journey, one of the most critical factors for your plants health and growth is the quality of your soil. A well balanced, nutrient-rich potting mix provides the foundation for your plants to thrive. While commercially available potting mixes are convenient, creating your own can be a rewarding and cost-effective alternative.

We were recently joined on The Garden Hustle by botanist, naturalist, writer, educator and plant lover Botanically Rosie. Rosie shared her easy DIY potting mix recipe, perfect for improving the health of indoor plants. Check out the complete recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • Scotts Osmocote Premium Potting Mix: A blend with superior water-holding capacity, enriched with added nitrogen to promote robust root development, resulting in healthier and more vigorous plants, a top choice for your DIY soil.

  • Orchid Mix: Specially formulated for fruit trees and orchid plants, promoting healthy root development, improved drainage, and enhanced nutrient retention.

  • Perlite: A volcanic glass that enhances drainage and aeration in the mix.

  • Coir: Organic material improving water retention and aeration.

Method:

  1. Start by combining 3 parts Scotts Osmocote Premium Potting Mix, 2 Parts Orchid mix, 1 part Perlite and 1 part Coir into a bowl.

2. Thoroughly mix all the ingredients together with your hands.

3. After adding the soil to your plants, it’s crucial to water them appropriately. To test the soils moisture stick your finger into your pot plant. If your finger comes out clean and feels warm, the soil is dry and ready for watering. If it comes out wet, the soil has sufficient water.

It is important to wear both a mask and gloves when dealing with soil, compost, or potting mix. After handling these materials, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Mixing your own potting mix is easy and it means you have complete control of one of the most critical steps in the growing process.
